Information for Parents regarding
Student Medication
Whenever possible, morning doses of medication should be
given at home. This allows the child to have minimum disruption
in the school day. Antibiotics and many ear and eye drops can be
given at home in the morning, after school and at bedtime. Speak
to your physician regarding dosing around school hours. For
doses of medication that must be given during the school day or
at lunch time, a district permission form must be completed. All
medication must be brought to school in the original container.
All forms must be given to the school nurse. Transporting
medications by students is discouraged. All forms must be
updated at the start of every school year. Medications must be
picked up by a parent by the end of the school day on the last
day student attends school or the last day the medication is to
be given. If medications are needed on the bus, during field
studies, or for extracurricular activities, it is the parents'
responsibility to contact the school nurse to make arrangements.
Prescription medication should be properly labeled by the
pharmacist with the student's name, dose, time and name of
medication.
Over the counter medications must be in the
original container and must be age appropriate with the
directions for administering on the package. If the student will
require a larger dose than the package directions allow, or if
the child is younger than the package directions allow, a
prescription medication form will need to be completed by the
physician. Over the counter medications that require use longer
than recommended on the label require a signed prescription form
from the doctor. Over the counter medications given for off
label uses require a completed prescription form signed by a
physcian.
Students who need to self carry or self monitor
during the school day need to speak to their school nurse about
having an individualized health care plan for their child.
Students who need to carry their own medications (prescription
or over the counter) will need to have a self carry form
completed by the physician. The privilege to self carry can be
revoked if the student endangers himself/herself or another
student by misusing the medication. Herbal medications must
be treated as prescription medications and require a completed
prescription form.
Medications that are controlled
substances (such as Adderrall, Ritalin, Focalin, Concerta,
Straterra, etc.) must be brought to school by the parent and
counted with two school personnel. Signatures by all parties are
required for each drop off and pick up.
First time doses
of new medications can not be given at school due to the
potential for allergic reaction.
The use of Aspirin and
Aspirin containing products is not recommended for children
under 19 due to the potential for complications including Reye's
syndrome.
Cough drops are considered over the conter
medications if they limit the number of doses that can be given
in a day and require a completed over the counter form for
administration.
All medications must be provided by the
parent. The school does not keep stock medications for itching,
bug bites, burns, scrapes or contact care. A parent permission
form is required for all medications.
