Library Services

The school library media center is open continuously from 7:30-3:30 each school day. Students may come in on their own and without a pass before school, during lunch, and after school.  Students will need passes from teachers to come all other times during the school day.
Library use is a privilege extended to every student.   A student may lose the privilege to come to the library because of the following reasons:

Loud and boisterous behavior

Disrespect or refusal to cooperate

Not following library rules

Damage or theft of materials

Library Use for Class Projects
We encourage you to make frequent assignments requiring your students to use the library media center to explore your subject area. We are glad to help you plan and implement these research projects.

To bring classes to the library, you need to sign up on the schedule book in the library media center office at least one day in advance.  You can sign up for 45 minutes each class block and are welcome to sign up for multiple days, but for no more than three consecutive school days.  You may also email the library media center staff to check on available times and to sign up your class.

Plan to stay with your class in the library media center and do not plan for a substitute teacher to bring your class to the library.  It is important for you to be with your class when questions arise about the assignment.

Please discuss your research assignment with one of us to be sure adequate resources are available for the topics assigned and prepare your class for the assignment before they arrive.   To help you, we can create lists of resources available, put books on reserve, and add relevant websites to the media center webpage.  Before each class, one of us will introduce your students to the major reference works in your subject area.

We are also happy to create displays on special topics being explored by your students and display projects made by your students in the library media center.   The staff will be glad to work with you to implement any ideas you have.  The more advanced notice you give, the better we can serve you and your students.

If your class will need to use  computers in the library media center to complete their assignments, they may use the  research lab.  If you do not know which students have completed the proper forms for computer use, please ask the library staff to print you a list.  If you ask up to  48 hours in advance, a list of students who have not completed computer forms along with the forms will be placed in your mailbox.  Please give the forms to students, have them complete them, and return them to the library media center when your class comes for their scheduled time.  If time does not permit giving out forms, you will be given a list of students who do not have computer permission when your class comes to the library media center.

You may also check out a collection of library resources to your classroom for students to use.

Other Library Use

You may send up to five students from your class to the library for up to thirty minutes.   Substitutes cannot send students to the library.  Your students will need to have a library media center pass stating their assignment.  We will place library media center passes in your mailbox at the beginning of the year.  Please let us know when you need more.  When students leave the library media center, we will stamp their passes stamped with the date and time of their departure.

Please make arrangements in advance to use the conference room and the library media center facility.   If you sign up for a group to use the library media center for a meeting, please be sure all chairs and tables are back in their proper place before you leave.

Use of Library Materials

Books may be checked out for a period of two weeks by students and renewed if necessary.  A fine of ten cents per day is charged for overdue books and materials.
Teachers may check out materials for an indefinite period.  These materials should be returned no later than inventory time at the end of each school year.
Students should use periodicals and AV materials in the library media center.  If students need to take these materials from the library, they must have a note to verify the use.
All periodicals needed by teachers must be checked out with the library media center staff.
On your computer desktop is an icon named OPAC.  This is a link to the library media center’s card catalog and allows you to search the library’s collection from your computer.

Audio-Visual Materials

The following audio-visual equipment is available for short term check-out.  Sign-up for this equipment is done on the schedule book in the library media center workroom and must be done 24 hours in advance.  Please notify us  if any equipment is not working properly.

At the beginning of the school year, you will receive a form to list the equipment you will need for the entire year.  During the school year, you may check out equipment when needed.  VCR’s may be checked out daily.  You may sign these out in the library media center.

Videos are color coded by department.  If you wish to check-out a video that belongs  to another department, please check with us.   If you want to use a video that  does not belong to LEHS, you will need to print a permission form from our website, complete it, and have the principal sign it.

Video Taping

The library media center has both taping and playback capabilities.  Programs from ITV, ETV, Channel One, Discovery Channel and open-air channels can be taped upon the teacher's request.  All copyright guidelines will be maintained.
ITV and ETV: Program guidebooks from ITV programming are available upon request. A schedule of ITV & ETV programs is available at http://www.knowitall.org. Some of the individual programs have teacher manuals, and these can be ordered upon request.  The school receives an ETV guidebook, The Scene, which teachers may borrow.
