  ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fact Sheet on the Technology Initiative

  • The vendor selected to provide the laptops and other services is the Hewlett Packard Company.  It was chosen after extensive presentations by three major computer vendors.

  • 1,204 laptops will be provided this year.  This number includes computers for all ninth grade students, all high school teachers, and spare computers for use during repair periods.

  • Each high school will have its own computer technician assigned to the school to assist with the laptop program.

  • Each high school will also have a Technology Curriculum Coach, a master teacher who can assist other teachers with using the computer as a teaching tool.

  • Because teacher training in integrating the computer into classroom instruction is the key to the success of the project, a company called Classroom Connect will provide extensive training to high school teachers in using the computer as an instructional tool.

  • The district’s contract allows for instructional peripherals such as projectors, digital cameras, scanners, and smart boards to assist teachers in using the technology in the classroom.

  • Laptops given to students will be “industrial strength” models equipped for heavy student use and built to withstand bumps and drops.

  • After four years, a student can purchase his computer from the district for a projected cost of $50.

  • Software on the computers will all be the same and is being selected based on recommendations of teacher, principals, and media specialists.

  • Computers will have a filtering system to prevent student access to inappropriate sites. Computer site visits can also be tracked at the district level and will be done so to spot check and monitor computer usage.

  • Each computer will have software and hardware which will allow law enforcement to track a stolen computer when someone uses it to go online.

  • A parent orientation will be held prior to students receiving computers to discuss important issues with parents.

  • Parents of students other than ninth graders and any school staff members will be able to purchase laptops for their own use, if desired, at the price being given to the school district. A link will be placed on the district’s website when this information is available.
